Why does an AI agent need an h1?
We read the first h1 on the page and record its text, or record that no h1 element was found.
What it is
The h1 is the page's headline in the markup, not in the design. It states the subject of the page in one line, and the h2 and h3 elements below it divide the page into parts.
We read the first h1 and report its text. We do not count duplicates, so this Check is about presence rather than uniqueness.
A visually large heading built from a styled `div` or a `span` is not an h1. It looks like a headline and is structurally anonymous.
Why an agent needs it
Heading order is how an agent segments a long page into sections it can quote separately. Without it, the page is one undifferentiated block of text.
The h1 is also the fallback we use for your llms.txt summary when the homepage has no meta description. A page with neither gives us nothing to write from.
The Fix
Give every page one h1 that names the page in words a buyer would use. Keep the visual styling separate from the element you choose.
Use h2 and h3 in order below it, without skipping levels for the sake of a font size. Each section heading should read sensibly out of context.
Check your templates rather than individual pages. A missing h1 is almost always a layout that wraps its headline in a styled div.
This one is a change in your own markup or edge configuration, so the Fix Pack cannot write it for you. A Report names every page it affects, with the Evidence.
