Why does my sitemap show 0 URLs?

We follow Sitemap lines from robots.txt, then try /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml, and count the URLs on your origin.

What it is

A sitemap is an XML file listing the addresses you want a crawler to consider. Each address sits in a `<loc>` element inside a `<urlset>`.

A sitemap index is a list of sitemaps rather than pages. When we find a `<sitemapindex>`, we open the first 3 child sitemaps and collect their URLs.

We count only addresses on the same origin as the site we are scanning, so a feed of third-party URLs does not inflate the number.

Why an agent needs it

A sitemap is the only place most sites state the full set of pages that exist. Without one, an agent sees whatever your navigation happens to link.

A count of 0 usually has one of 3 causes. The file is a stale template, it lists a different hostname, or its children returned an error.

The Fix

Publish an XML sitemap listing every page you want an agent to consider, and reference it from robots.txt with a Sitemap line.

Check that the `<loc>` values use the same scheme and hostname the site actually serves. A sitemap of http:// or non-www addresses on a https:// www site counts as 0 URLs here.

If you use an index, fetch its children yourself and confirm each returns 200 with a `<urlset>`. Keep it generated, not hand-maintained.

This one is a change in your own markup or edge configuration, so the Fix Pack cannot write it for you. A Report names every page it affects, with the Evidence.
